We had the great opportunity to go to the Norwest Auckland Intermediate Swimming Meet. Eleven Colwill students (our attempt at a swim team) competed, and although we did not come in first, they all swam their hardest. They used us as official timers, and often reminded us that we were one of the most important parts to the success of the day. It was kind of a lot of pressure making sure we were getting accurate times, but it was fun to be in the middle of all the action!
It was fun to get to know some of the older kids at Colwill since I'm surrounded by the little ones for the majority of my days. On the car ride over to the meet, there was not a single moment of silence because the students kept asking me all kinds of questions about America. "Have you done this?" or "Have you seen this?" or "Have you met this person?" It was fun to hear the different things they know about America. They were disappointed that I hadn't seen Taylor Lautner's Hollywood star (werewolf in Twilight), but sooo excited that I've met Taylor Swift. Here are a few girls before the races began!
Our students swam freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and the freestyle relay. For not having practiced as much as the other teams, and for not having matching swimming togs (suits) like some of the other teams, they really did great :)
We all took our job as timers very seriously, making sure we stopped it right when they touched the wall. Here is Jess and I trying to be as exact as possible as the swimmer in our lane is just finishing his race.
This is Braun. He is one of the kids in the Primary class we teach every week at church. It was so fun to see him at the meet and cheer him on.
He is such a stud :)
Here are the four Colwill girls with all our wonderful Colwill swimmers. We were all pretty exhausted after a long day in the sun! (i think we were able to cover our exhaustion with smiles a bit better than they were haha). Just another day in the life of a BYU teacher at Colwill :)
I had two other highlights of my day:
- I got to skype with the fam after school :) We didn't have a great connection, but it was great to see and hear from them!
- One of the teachers at Colwill teaches a class at one of the local gyms called, "Everyone Flex." She took us with her today and it was SO good. It was a weights/aerobic class, and I am already sore. We haven't done a lot of weights since we've been here (due to the fact we have no access to weights or a gym), so it was fun to add some variety to our work out. Mom, get ready to go to some classes at the gym with me when I get home :)
